Richat Structure – Mauritania

The Richat Structure, also called The Eye of Africa or The Eye of Sahara is an eroded geological dome about 25 miles (40 Km) in diameter. Multiple layers of sedimentary and volcanic rock appear as concentric rings.

Some scientists initially thought it was the result of a meteor impact, but now they think that the structure was formed by erosion through wind and water of uplifted rocks.

Mount Roraima – Brazil – Venezuela – Guyana

Discovered in 1895, Mount Roraima is the backdrop for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel Lost World, published in 1912. The mountain takes the form of a tabletop and is usually wreathed in clouds.

Antarctica

Antarctica, the southernmost continent is the land of the unknown. The beauty of Antarctica goes beyond imagination. Visitable but uninhabitable, it is the last unspoiled place on earth. Cruises visit the Antarctic Peninsula from November to March, allowing tourists short trips ashore. Research stations subsist only by constant resupply of food and fuel.

Yellowstone National Park – Wyoming USA

Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, was established in 1872. It is inside a giant volcanic caldera formed by a massive eruption about 640,000 years ago. Yellowstone is home to the world’s largest collection of geysers and other thermal features.

Rainbow Mountain – Cusco, Peru

Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain is located near Cusco, Peru. Its spectacular colors are due to a high concentration of mineral deposits in the rock. Located at over 17,000 feet high it was only recently discovered due to the melting glacial ice cap in the region.

Caño Cristales – Colombia

Caño Cristales or Crystal Channel is one of the world’s most beautiful rivers. The striking colors visible in the river are due to endemic plant species growing in the water. The colors can change depending on the season and the amount of rainfall.

Perito Moreno – Argentina

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not retreating. It is fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the world’s third-largest reserve of freshwater. Located near the southern tip of South America, Perito Moreno is a major tourist attraction.

Lavender Fields – Provence, France

The Provence region of France is famous for its unequaled fields of Lavender.

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, USA

Crater Lake National Park is located in the US state of Oregon. As its name implies the lake is formed in a volcanic crater. The lake is almost 2,000 feet deep and has no inlets or outlets, being fed entirely by rain and snowfall. The island visible in the lake is the reforming cone of the not extinct volcano.

Lençóis Maranhenses – Maranhão, Brazil

The Lençois Maranhenses National Park is located in the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhão. Its strikingly white sand dunes are filled with clear blue lakes during the rainy season from January to June.
