The Struggle for Aturial: Part II

The planet of Aturial is scared of the soon-to-be new world leadership. Aturial’s Democratic countries are horrified that Usial, the most powerful of the democratic countries, is changing so drastically in behavior. They watch with disbelief as Usial’s new leader threatens tariffs on imports, breaking trade agreements, and annexing legitimate democracies.

The new leader also announces coming concentration camps, defames people, uses lies to defend his interests, and promises mass deportation even for citizens of Usial. Corruption seems to be blatant, euphemistically called “Pay To Play”. These are the reasons why the planet and the sane people of Usial have no words to describe the distress they are going through. This is the crucial reality that scares all of Aturial. Everybody in Aturial knows that only the people in Usial, Usial’s citizens, can fix that. How could anybody imagine that democracy could be used to destroy democracy? Who could heal the attempts against Usial’s democracy? The people of Usial, certainly. So let’s imagine the reverse situation (Paraphrasing the Greeks) where “entrance into the State of Emergency” when an institution with power will be able to reinstall the democratic system.

According to the ancient Greek Constitution, in an emergency, or a situation of war or mobilization owing to external dangers, or an imminent threat against national security, as well as in case of an armed coup aiming to overthrow the democratic regime, a temporary entry into the State of Emergency is allowed. Thus, a state of emergency is declared by the Parliament by issuing a resolution upon a proposal of the Cabinet. The armed forces of Usial are decent, educated, strong, and defenders of the integrity of the Nation. They could take over for some time to reinstall democracy.

To reinstall real Democracy, it would be necessary to update an outdated constitution with several fundamental changes:

• Moving to a parliamentary multi-party system with a weak President,
• Redrawing legislative districts, perhaps with the help of AI, so that the districts have the shortest boundaries,
• Creating barriers to ensure that officeholders are both qualified and have the integrity to lead the public,
• Establishing true equal rights of all citizens so that:
  • All votes have equal weight,
  • All citizens have access to education, healthcare, housing, jobs, and a decent retirement.
  • All judges should be appointed by committees composed of other Judges and legal scholars.

After this process, which should last no longer than 6 months, elections should be held. All the people of Aturial would be safer and democratic believers again.
