The Architecture of the Lie

(Excerpt from “A Look Out of the Bubble” )

There are many reasons why people lie. Some lie out of fear, afraid of consequences, rejection, or the vulnerability that truth demands. Others lie to protect someone they love, to soften a blow, to preserve a fragile peace. These lies, though troubling, still carry traces of humanity.

But there are lies that lack even the pretense of justification. Lies told by those in high office, public servants, press secretaries, elected officials, who speak with the authority of the state and the ease of a seasoned performer. They lie without blinking, without blushing, without the faintest tremor of conscience. They lie as if truth were a nuisance, a relic of a more naïve time.

What unsettles me most is not just the content of these lies, but the comfort with which they are delivered. The conviction. The repetition. The way they speak is as if addressing children, children who still believe in Santa Claus. Or perhaps worse, as if speaking to people they consider intellectually deficient. They close chats when challenged, dodge questions, and continue, undaunted, in their campaign of untruth.

Their goal is not dialogue, but domination. Not persuasion, but manipulation. And disturbingly, they succeed. They twist numbers, distort facts, and fabricate polls. They defame with ease and abandon truth without remorse. Their allegiance is not to reality, but to whatever serves their interests.

I recall the chilling words attributed to Goebbels or Stalin: “A lie told often becomes the truth.” And I wonder, are we now living in that reality? A world where repetition replaces reason, and conviction masquerades as credibility?

This is not just a political concern. It is a psychological wound. To live in a post-truth society is to feel disoriented, gaslit, and unmoored. It is to question your own perceptions, to doubt what you see with your own eyes. It is to feel, at times, like you are losing your grip on reality—not because you are confused, but because confusion is being manufactured around you.
